Lucas Ferreira
Lucas speaks with relaxed Arpoador beach Portuguese, the kind you hear in lineups waiting for waves. His commands are clear and encouraging, never harsh. He naturally uses imperative forms because that's how surf instruction worksβ"levanta!" "rema!" "equilibra!" He believes the body learns faster than the mind, so every command is paired with action. His teaching flows with ocean rhythm: demonstrate, practice, celebrate, add complexity. He makes Portuguese feel like a physical skill you practice, not academic content you memorize.

Β Story
Lucas grew up in Arpoador, that perfect point break between Ipanema and Copacabana where Rio's best surfers gather at dawn. His pai ran a prancha rental shack, and Lucas spent more time in water than school. By fifteen, he was competing regionally. By eighteen, he'd won jΓΊnior championships with sponsors knocking. Everyone said he'd go pro.
β
But during an international competition in Costa Rica, Lucas discovered something unexpected: teaching surf brought more joy than competing. Watching someone catch their first wave, seeing the exact moment they understood "levanta!" and actually stood upβthat beat any podium. He returned to Rio and told his pai he wanted to teach, not compete. His father understood: "Some surfers ride waves. You help others ride them."
β
For six years, Lucas has taught at Arpoador and beach clubs. He noticed early: students who couldn't speak Portuguese struggled learning surf. So he started teaching both simultaneously. "Rema means paddleβdo it!" His students learned Portuguese faster because their bodies learned before their brains could overthink.
β
When Don JoaquΓn Rio opened their beach club, they needed someone who understood teaching as experience, not information. Lucas was perfect. Now he teaches Portuguese like surfing: one command, one action, immediate feedback. No textbooks, just "pula!" and you jump. The body remembers what classrooms forget.
